as we have come to term “split type” Air Conditioning in the industry is perhaps a derogatory term for a product which can deliver so much more. In today’s world of energy efficiency we should look perhaps not so much at Air Conditioning’s ability to cool an area, even although global warming is continually raising summer temperatures, but more so it’s ability to heat an area. Reverse Cycle (Heat Pump) Air Conditioning has the ability, to provide Heat In the winter and Cooling in the Summer. Whilst on heating these systems have an efficiency second to none. Electric or the best condensing gas boilers may be 95 to 100% efficient a Heat Pump is more like 300% efficient. That is with electricity you pay for 1kW of heating and get 1kW, with gas you pay for 1kW and get 0.95kW, but with a Heat Pump you pay for 1kW and get 3kW - that is three times the heat for your money, it’s not every day you genuinely get something for nothing (statistics taken from the Proceedings of The Institute of Refrigeration). When we add this to the fact these systems produce less CO₂ emissions than the other heat sources then we have not only a cheap, but environmentally friendly heat source.
